Diesel fuel consists of a mixture of different hydrocarbons. The boiling range is between 180° and 360°C. The diesel engine has rather modest demands as regards fuel quality and can even be operated using fuels with very widely varying characteristics.

In Austria, the minimum requirement for diesel fuel is defined by ÖNORM EN 590, based upon the Fuel regulation (Kraftstoffverordnung).
